About

Tobias Herzog

Currently

I work as a film composer and sound designer based in Basel. My work screens in cinemas, at festivals and in exhibitions — most recently the short film “Lutte” and the feature documentary “Automania”. Alongside that I develop audiovisual work in which sound and image grow from the same material.

Approach

Music and sound design are separate disciplines with their own tools. In film, though, they can be thought through together from the start instead of arriving one after the other. That is where I like to work: where sound concept and narrative structure still change one another.

Visual music brings a second way of thinking. Once you structure images the way you structure music — by rhythm, density, repetition — you also hear film music differently. That connection runs through my work, whether in documentary, commercial or installation.

Background

Trained as a percussionist, performing on stages across Europe. 2013–2018 Master in Sound Arts at Bern University of the Arts. In 2015 an internship at “idee und klang studio”, contributing to productions such as “Heidi” and “The Diary of Anne Frank”.

Completed a Master in Film at Lucerne University in 2024. Since then I have worked continuously on film and installation projects — increasingly on productions where music and sound design stay in the same hands. Under the name Clockworked I also release my own electronic music.

Search

How sound and image work together occupies me beyond the individual project. That ongoing search produced, among other things, my master's thesis “Synthese von Klang und Bild”.

Voices

Making music is simple. But how can abstract concepts be turned into sounds? Tobias Herzog has the ability to develop a soundscape from just a few keywords.
